  1. Tools you can use to find information are called search engines.
The difference between an index and a directory is directories indentify information and classify websites into categories while indexes search all the contents of a website.
You would use an index when you're searching for something but the criteria may have nothing to do with your search. You use a directory when you're looking for something specific.
I currently use Google because it is the most widely-used and it is easy for me to refine my search and still have many results to choose from.
You can refine your seearch by inserting quotations around a phrase(i.e. Shelby Pope to "Shelby Pope") or you could use a hyphen to exclude words from the results.(i.e. "Shelby Pope" -Roman -Catholic -Priest)

  2. Some of the search tools that are available for your use are google, yahoo, and bing. A directory has more specific information than an index;an example of an directory is yahoo. An index matches your key words to words on websites which could lead you to some very useful sites; examples of indexs are google and bing. You would use an index when looking for specific information about a person. You would use a directory when you want to find websites that pertain to your search request. I currently use google,an index, I prefer using this because I know how to find information easily on topics. Some ways to refine your searchs are to use AND or OR, and possibly using the advanced search types on google or other search engines.

  3. Search tools you can use are various search engines, such as google, bing, yahoo, and ask.com.
The difference between an index and a directory is that a directory organizes major topics and subtopics. An index has very relevent results.
You would use an index when you are looking for specific information. If you want info on the general subject, then use a directory.
I currently use google and ask.com. This is because in google you can use the advanced search, which immensly narrows down the results. I use ask.com because when you search there you dont get irrelevant results or advertising.
You can refine your search various ways. For example, you can put quotes around you search that way the engine searches for the entire phrase, instead of each individual word. Also, you can use google advanced search and change the language, document type and reading level.

  4. A search engine is a tool that is widely used by the world to find information off the web. The two main types of search engines-directory and index, serve the same purpose but meet different qualifications. A directory is good at finding general information relating to your search term. For example you might go to Yahoo! to find out information about colleges in Michigan. On the other hand, an index, which is very much like a directory, specializes in searching the specifics. They also use software programs called spiders(differing from directorys). If you were looking for a biography of a famed figure, habitats of a certain animal, or other specifics you would use an index such as Google or Bing. Currently, I use index search engines more often then directory search engines. I prefer the index engines because they are more efficient in finding exactly what you need. There are also many ways to refine your search. You can insert quotations around your search term to get more relative sites. The best way to refine your search though is to use the advanced search option offered on some search engines.

  6. To find information on the internet you can use a search engine such as Yahoo, Google, or Bing. Yahoo is a directory and is best used for finding places, like a museum or university. It gives you web sites based on what is related to your search term. Google and Bing are web indexes and are best used when your looking for a variety of different information. Indexes search the entire website to see if their is information relevant to your search and they bring back the best. I currently use Google. I prefer this because it is what I've always used and it seems like you can find whatever your looking for on it. You can look over many websites to find what is best suited for you. You can refine your search many different ways, but some work better than others. Putting quotes around a search term will only bring back pages with that exact quote in it. Also, Google has a very handy advanced search that can narrow things down alot. You can decide what language, document type, excluded words, reading level, etc. that you want.

  11. What you use to search anything is called a search engine. A search engine is any website that is a tool to let you search anything you need on the internet. There are two different types an index and a directory. An index is used to search anything with really specific details. A directory is used to search more general information and knowledge. Bing and Google are indexes that are the most popular and useful. They have millions of results on your search and a fast amount of time. The indexes search the whole web and find the best reviewed sites and give them to you. Directories find anything general to your topic and bring that back to you. I prefer using index searches because they give you the best specific information on your topic you need. If you need to search for a report or on a topic for school I would suggest using Google and using an Advanced Search. Advanced Search allows you to narrow down your search even more and exclude what you don't want. This adds parenthesis around direct phrases and helps you find the most useful info for your topic. it allows you to choose your language, reading level, document types and many more options. It allows you to work less for what you need.

  13. google, yahoo and bing are all search engines are all search egines in which you can find information. An index will search the contents of a site and are very specific, while a directory is basic information. You would use an index search engine for more advanced and reliable information, and a directory for an idea of the subject. I currently use google because they have advanced search and you can choose the catagory of your search such as news, images or shopping. Ways to refine your search is to go on advanced search to specify what you are looking for.
